Contrary to earlier reports, the Black captain of the infamous Montgomery Riverboat embroiled in a racial brawl last summer will not be charged in the incident.
Dameion Pickett, captain of the Harriott II was initially charged with third-degree assault, but those claims have been proven to be false.
On Thursday, Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed and police Chief Darryl J. Albert issued a statement Thursday explaining that the city and police department refuse to file charges against Dameion Pickett. They also confirmed that the police investigation considers Pickett to be a victim.
The boat co-captain along with a dock worker was attacked by a group of white people in a viral brawl at Montgomery’s riverfront is now facing charges in connection to the incident.
The brawl unfolded after Pickett moved a pontoon boat that was illegally parked in the Hariott ll’s docking location. Chaos ensued after Pickett moved the boat.
However, Reggie Ray, the man who swung a chair when he came to the defense of a dock worker, a hero to some and villain others, has established a GoFund Me account for his defense fund for charges filed against him in the Montgomery, Alabama riverboat brawl. Merritt, who turned himself into law officials on Sunday, Aug. 11 and was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct in while coming to the aid of Riverboat dock employee who was ambushed and beaten by a mob of White boaters.
The entire incident went viral and the scene with Ray coming to the dock workers aid by taking action and using a folding chair to fend off several of the assailants, including a White man and woman has been heralded by millions of viewers who have contributed in access of $260,000 to fight any and all charges.
Ray was “involuntarily roped into the disorderly conduct initiated by a violent white mob,” his attorney, Lee Merritt, said in a statement obtained by “ABC News.”
