The Gist: The State Route 42 Spur/McDonough Boulevard Bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Fulton County has been completed and opened to pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Jan. 27.
Why It Matters: The new $8.3 million concrete bridge, which is 170-feet long and 54-feet wide, replaces the old bridge built in 1924 and meets or exceeds industry standards for structural integrity and carriage of weights. The new bridge also has wider lane widths, which will help accommodate truck turning movements and prevent damage to the bridge.
What’s Next: While the bridge is now open to traffic, some remaining project activities will continue through spring 2023, including installation of vegetation, traffic signal timing adjustments, paving and striping adjustments necessary for full project completion.
Some of these activities may require traffic impacts for the safety of drivers, pedestrians and work crews.
More Information: The project also included improvements to adjacent roadways, including the installation of 7-foot wide sidewalks with ADA-compliant crossings and shoulders at Lakewood Avenue and Milton Avenue/Hill Street.
These improvements and the new traffic signals at Lakewood and Milton/Hill are designed to improve pedestrian and driver safety and relieve traffic congestion through the area.
The full project completion is tentatively scheduled for February to April 2023.
