Gwinnett County’s nine-member state Senate delegation was split 6-3 this week over a bill calling for a referendum on whether Buckhead should split from the city of Atlanta.
The Senate rejected the bill in a 33-23 vote on Thursday after several Republican senators opted to vote against it. Their votes came after Gov. Brian Kemp signaled his concerns this week about Buckhead breaking away from the rest of Atlanta.
But, Gwinnett’s Senate delegation was firmly split along party lines over the bill.
Sens. Gloria Butler, Nikki Merritt, Sheikh Rahman, Sally Harrell, Nabilah Islam and Kim Jackson voted against the bill.
Meanwhile, Sens. Clint Dixon, Shawn Still and Bill Cowsert voted for the bill’s passage.
State Rep. Marvin Lim, D-Norcross, wants to see law enforcement have better training on how to deal with diverse communities in Georgia, so rather than simply asking officials to look into it, he’s decided to make it happen himself.
Lim has worked with the Georgia Public Safety Training Center to develop a new online training course to teach law enforce officers from across the state how to properly interact with multicultural communities. He lawmaker came up with the idea in the aftermath of the shootings at Asian-owned spa businesses in March 2021, and he worked with experts from community groups while the course was being developed.
The new new course is called “Cultural Adeptness in Law Enforcement.”
