LOS ANGELES — A gunman opened fire, killing 10 and wounding 10 Saturday, in the midst of Lunar New Year celebrations in Southern California’s Asian American enclave of Monterey Park, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
It was not clear what the motive was behind the massacre, and the suspect remained at large, Capt. Andrew Meyer from the department’s homicide division said at a news conference early Sunday.
Monterey Police Department officers first responded to a dance hall after reports of a shooting came in at 10:22 p.m. local time Saturday, Los Angeles Sheriff Robert Luna said Sunday morning. People were rushing out of the hall as officers went into the business.
Ten people were killed at the venue, and an additional 10 people were transported to local hospitals conditions ranging from stable to critical, Luna said. Four of the injured were being treated at LAC + USC Medical Center, the hospital confirmed.
