JONESBORO — Perry Career Academy Principal Terry Young was recently named the 2023 Georgia Association for Alternative Educators (GAAE) Administrator of the Year.
The announcement was made at the recent GAAE annual conference in Atlanta.
The Georgia Association for Alternative Educators is an association that promotes alternative education throughout the state of Georgia. GAAE is composed of current and retired educators who are advocates for alternative/nontraditional education.
A GAAE Administrator of the Year must demonstrate exemplary performance in the following areas — exceptional leadership in managing school programs, commitment to educational quality and student achievement, creativity and innovation in dealing with issues and problems facing public education, and exceptional leadership in identifying and implementing strategies that support technology-infused teaching and learning.
“It is with great pride that I congratulate Dr. Terry Young on winning the prestigious award,” said Clayton County School Superintendent Anthony W. Smith. “Since 2018, the first year such data was tracked, the percentage of students graduating from Perry Career Academy has grown substantially under his stewardship. He is a true leader and is well deserving of the honor.”
Young has been part of CCPS for 20 years and has served as the executive director/principal of the Perry Career Academy since 2012, providing students in CCPS an opportunity to earn a high school diploma in a non-traditional setting.
Young is also the former principal of Riverdale High School and former Principal of the Year for CCPS.
Throughout his 31 years in education, he has also served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and executive director.
