REX — Board of Commissioners Chair Jeffrey Turner is hosting a town hall to keep residents in the loop about the coming mandatory trash pickup ordinance.
The town hall will be held at the New Testament Gospel Church 6755 Fielder Road in Rex on April 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Turner said the majority of the time will be spent educating residents on the program’s timeline. However, he said he wants to hear from the community about what they’re looking for in trash service.
“I want to know what they would like from service, be it senior discounts, bulk pickup, back door services, things like that so when we put out our Request For Proposal we know what to include,” he said.
The county has considered requiring trash service for several years. In the last two, the Board of Commissioners voted to move forward with the policy.
Last March, the county submitted a Request for Qualifications from refuse companies. In June, officials announced six companies were evaluated and found to satisfactorily perform hauling working in the county.
The county has not yet issued a Request For Proposal, which is required to move forward.
“Mandatory trash is coming unless the board decides differently,” Turner said. “I want to keep our citizens informed.”
