JONESBORO — Elementary students throughout Clayton County recently had the chance to showcase their reading skills.
On Saturday, Oct. 21, Clayton County Public Schools hosted its first Helen Ruffin Picture Book Reading Bowl at M.D. Roberts Middle School of the Arts.
While this is the seventh annual picture book reading competition held within CCPS, 2023 is the first year that the organizers of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl have included the picture book (kindergarten through third grade competition) as part of its offerings with the intent of expanding to regional and national level competitions in the future.
Following the same format at the annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, teams from 25 local elementary schools competed using quizzing buzzers to answer questions about the 20 picture books nominated for the Georgia Picture Book Award.
As the six-round competition concluded, each student received a free book to add to their home library before gathering in the gymnasium to participate in a dance party before announcing winning teams and closing remarks.
Winners of the 2023-24 Helen Ruffin Picture Book Reading Bowl included Kay R. Pace Elementary School of the Arts in first place, Jackson Elementary in second, and Tara Elementary in third.
Other schools competing were Harper Elementary, Kemp Elementary, East Clayton Elementary, Lake City Elementary, Arnold Elementary, Marshall Elementary, Riverdale Elementary, Haynie Elementary, Michelle Obama STEM Elementary Academy, Suder Elementary, Huie Elementary, Fountain Elementary, Kilpatrick Elementary, Callaway Elementary, Lake Ridge Elementary, West Clayton Elementary, Morrow Elementary, Pointe South Elementary, Swint Elementary, Oliver Elementary, Unidos Dual Language Elementary, and Smith Elementary.
