JONESBORO — The city of Jonesboro recently held a swearing-in ceremony for mayor and city council members, but one of the highlights of the event was from Kay Pace Elementary School of the Arts student De’Asyia O’Hara.
O’Hara displayed her oratory skills by performing a rendition of Amanda Gorman’s “New Day” — which left many attendees in tears.
Her selection for the event came directly from Mayor Donya Sartor, who was impressed by O’Hara’s performance in the lead role of the Clayton County Public Schools’ All-District Musical “Matilda Jr.” last year.
“Clayton County Public Schools takes immense pride in De’Asyia’s achievements,” a statement from Clayton County Public Schools read. “As a bright star in our magnet schools, she exemplifies the district’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering academic and artistic excellence. We congratulate De’Asyia on this significant accomplishment and look forward to her future successes.”
The swearing-in ceremony kicked off Sartor’s first full term as mayor.
Council members Alfred Dixon, Tracey Messick, and Asjah Miller were also sworn in during the Jan. 8 ceremony at Jonesboro First Baptist Church.
