The Gwinnett Chamber kicked off the 2024 “Leap Year” with its first On Topic luncheon of the year, featuring an insightful Legislative Session update. The event, sponsored by Porter Steel, brought together influential figures like Dave Williams, Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Talent at the Metro Atlanta Chamber, and State House Representatives Soo Hong of Georgia’s 103rd District and Dewey McClain of Georgia’s 109th District.
As 2024 is an election year, Representative Dewey McClain highlighted the likelihood of an election bill being introduced. Representative Soo Hong, serving as a Floor Leader for the Governor, emphasized the importance of addressing sports betting and school choice during this session. Speakers also addressed key topics on the Governor’s priority list including a significant income tax decrease, the need to increase efforts to combat human trafficking, and addressing tort reform to keep the state at the top of the list for business-friendly climates. The budget surplus, healthcare priorities, education initiatives, and affordable housing needs all made the list of topics discussed as well. Representative Hong also made a note to ask all Gwinnettians to get out and vote yes for the upcoming Homestead tax exemption referendums in May which aims to help Gwinnett citizens stay in their homes.
The Gwinnett Chamber’s commitment to engaging in discussions on vital issues is evident in this Legislative Session update. The next On Topic luncheon will feature Anna Roach, Executive Director of the Atlanta Regional Commission, presenting this year’s State of the Region address.
