JONESBORO — The Jonesboro Youth City Government will have its first fundraiser — #LetsRoll — Thursday, April 4 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Skate Zone, 6766 Mt. Zion Blvd., Morrow.
The event will help support the youth of Clayton and Henry counties.
“The JYCG is dedicated to empowering the youth through civic engagement, leadership and community service projects,” a press release read.
The JYC is comprised of students in grades eight to 12 with a youth mayor, six Youth Council members and one youth city manager supported by youth committee members countywide.
“Our mission is to provide our youth with opportunities for growth, skill development and community involvement,” said Jonesboro City Council member Alfred Dixon. “This will ultimately strengthen the community and enhance the quality of live for all our residents. With your support, we aim to achieve several important objectives.”
Those objectives include:
♦ Reimagining summer camps and establishing the “Jonesboro Midnight Basketball Association” to provide a safe and engaging environment for youth during late summer hours.
♦ Sending a group of aspiring young leaders to a Youth Leadership Training Conference this summer.
♦ Providing scholarships for graduating seniors to support their pursuit of higher education.
To fulfill these goals, JYCG aims to raise $15,000.
Jonesboro Youth Mayor is Mohammed Ali and he said he got involved in youth government because “I care about people.”
Some of the issues he wants to focus on are smoking and drugs in schools.
As far wanting to pursuing politics when he grows up, the Jonesboro Middle SchooL student is undecided as of now.
“This is my first time so I don’t know, but I’ll think about it if I want to get involved in politics,” he said.
