FOREST PARK — In an effort to increase traffic safety, the Forest Park Police Department has installed speed detection cameras in all school zones throughout the city.
According to the city of Forest Park, the high-tech, RedSpeed Cameras are equipped with a built-in radar that detects the speed of vehicles traveling through each school zone.
“Seeing that there will be a lot more pedestrians and vehicle traffic throughout the school year, it is imperative for drivers to practice safe driving habits and be ready to stop at a moment’s notice,” said Forest Park Police Chief Brandon Criss. “Slower speeds create a safer environment for children, so motorists should be aware of local speed limits before, during and after school hours, and refrain from distracted driving.”
The following are recommended safety tips when driving through or near a dedicated school zone area:
— Always be prepared to slow down: Speed limits in school zones tend to be 5 to 10 mph below the normal posted speed.
— Stop for buses: Passing a stopped school bus is against the law and can result in motorists receiving a ticket.
— Stop for crossing guards: If the school employs crossing guards, make sure you stop for them when they are holding up a stop sign. Drive extra slowly near the crosswalks so you can be prepared to stop quickly, if needed.
— Watch for pedestrians: Keep your eyes open for sidewalks, as well as around driveways, intersections and residential neighborhoods.
— Give yourself extra time when driving through a school zone: Being in a hurry near pedestrians is never safe, especially in high-traffic areas.
