ATLANTA — Elite Scholars Academy won its fourth straight PAGE (Professional Association of Georgia Educators) Georgia Academic Decathlon State Championship — earning the Howard Stroud Trophy — at the recent competition that culminated at Kennesaw State University.
Elite Scholars also won the second runner-up trophy in the annual Super Quiz competition.
More than 140 high school students from across the state competed in this event — which is unique because each nine-member team is made up of three students, representing three categories based on GPA.
Of the nine students who won medals as highest cumulative scorers, five are members of the Elite Scholars Academy team.
The ESA award winners include:
♦ Angelica Jones, Gold, Varsity Division.
♦ Anthony Reyes-Gonzalez, Silver, Varsity Division.
♦Deborah Gadri, Gold, Scholastic Division.
♦ Kristina Nguyen, Silver, Scholastic Division.
♦ Tony Doan, Silver, Honor Division.
Elite Scholars Academy will be submitted as the Georgia representative to the annual United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) National Competition, April 25 to 26 in Pittsburgh, Penn.
Each year, the program focuses on a different curriculum topic and this year’s curriculum is Technology & Humanity.
The 10 events in the decathlon are:
♦ Testing in seven content areas (economics, art, literature, mathematics, science, social science, and music).
♦ Three communication events (public speaking, personal interview, and written essay)
The event also includes a Super Quiz, comprised of questions from all seven of the testing areas.
