ATLANTA — Drew High School’s Alfred “Shivy” Brooks became the first active teacher to win a seat on the Atlanta Board of Education in a Tuesday, Dec. 5 runoff.
Brooks received 7,491 votes (63.31%, defeating incumbent Tamara Jones, who received 4,341 votes (35.69%) for the District 7 At-Large seat.
In the Nov. 7 general election, Jones had the most votes at 11,184 (49.17%) while Brooks received 10,505 (46.18%). William Sardin was in third place with 1,057 (4.65%).
Because no candidate received more than 50% of the votes, the race went to a runoff.
