HAMPTON — Clayton County Public Schools’ wheelchair basketball team — the Clayton Eagles — is in their first season in their new facility.
So far, the team has played a handful of games in the new facility — the Eagles Nest, which is part of the CCPS Central Office South in Hampton.
A highlight so far this season was a Jan. 27 contest against the defending state champions, the Houston County Sharks.
Even though the Eagles lost 36-27, the contest was even throughout most of the game.
“They played a great game and have shown tremendous improvement. I can’t wait for the next exciting game,” said Trina Smith, Director of Special Education.
The Clayton Eagles are a sports team that competes in a variety of adapted sports which provides the opportunity for students of varying ability levels to participate and support each other in a team setting.
The team competes in wheelchair handball (an adaptation of soccer), wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair football.
The district offers a range of options so that every student can find the sport that works for them with many students playing all three sports.
The playing field is made equitable for all students by requiring that all players use wheelchairs for mobility while in the field of play.
