JONESBORO — Clayton County Police Department K-9 Goran will be able to spend his retirement years with his handler thanks to a recent vote by the Clayton County Board of Commissioners.
At its Jan. 2 meeting, the Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to accept Goran’s retirement and to give Goran as a conditional gift to his handler, Sgt. Stephen D. Buice.
Buice received Goran in April 2018 after completing an eight-week handler course at Highland Canine Training in Harmony, N.C.
“At the school, the staff had labeled Goran as a ‘problem child’ and approached him with ‘kid gloves,’” Buice wrote on the Clayton County Police Department website. “After forming a bond with Goran, I learned that he was misunderstood and just a big baby.”
Goran is a German shepherd from Germany and is described as being “very protective of his handler.”
Goran is certified by the National Narcotics Detector Dog Association (NNDDA) for patrol and detection.
Also during the Jan. 2 meeting, commissioners voted to accept and retain Rocky — a 3-year-old Dutch shepherd — for the Clayton County Police Department K-9 unit.
