JONESBORO — After an early morning standoff, Clayton County Police arrested a man at an abandoned Jonesboro hotel Thursday, May 18.
According to Clayton County Jail records, Kendrick Dejuan Thomas, 38, of 9230 Raven Drive, Jonesboro, was charged with reckless conduct, obstructing an officer, third degree child cruelty, and cruelty to animals.
At 2:30 a.m., the Clayton County Police Department was called to an abandoned hotel after complaints of criminal activity in the 6300th block of Old Dixie Highway, near I-75 and Tara Boulevard.
According to the CCPS, an officer on the scene heard gunfire about 15 to 20 feet from him.
The officer spotted a man, later identified as Kendrick Thomas, in the neighboring parking lot and gave commands for him to stop.
Clayton Police said Thomas ran across the parking lot and into a room at another location. Video footage confirmed Thomas ran into the room after discharging his weapon.
Thomas then barricaded himself inside the room for about 90 minutes. He finally exited the room holding a baby and an adult female also exited the room next to Thomas.
A SWAT team was clearing the small room when they saw six dogs, two snakes, and one turtle.
One dog ran away, police said, and Clayton County Animal Control responded and picked up the remaining animals.
A search warrant was completed on the room and officers recovered a gun and shell casings.
