JONESBORO — The Clayton County Public Schools Career Technical and Agricultural Education program currently offers more than 130 career pathways for students.
During a Jan. 29 Clayton County Board of Education work session, CCPS CTAE Executive Director Pamela highlighted a few of the programs.
A glance at some of the programs and partnerships that were discussed during the work session:
Construction Ready
Drew, Jonesboro, Lovejoy, Mt. Zion, Mundy’s Mill, and Riverdale high schools and Perry Career Academy are affiliated with the nationally-recognized Construction Ready apprenticeship program where students earn construction skills and credentials.
Since the partnership was formed in 2022, there have been 54 graduates.
Georgia Power
Georgia Power has partnered with CCPS to provide training for students at Forest Park, Jonesboro, North Clayton, and Riverdale high schools.
Students are trained as line members and the paid internships are $15 per hour over about eight weeks.
Of 24 statewide positions in the summer of 2023, five students were from Clayton County.
Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services
In the firefighter career pathway, 28 students have been hired since 2020 and 21 are currently employed, according to information provided in the Jan. 29 meeting.
Schools affiliated in this program include Drew, Jonesboro, Morrow, Mundy’s Mill and Riverdale high schools, and Perry Career Academy.
Students begin with a $48,000 annual salary out of high school.
“We’re so very proud of that program,” Pitts said.
E-911 Communications
Pitts described the Clayton County E-911 Communications pathway as being in its “infancy,” and two students have been hired in this program.
