JONESBORO — With a unanimous vote Monday, June 26, the Clayton County Board of Education named Dr. Anthony W. Smith as superintendent.
The School Board appointed Smith as interim superintendent Dec. 5, 2022 and he began those duties Dec. 17.
Tuesday’s vote extended his contract for two years beginning July 1 and ending June 20, 2025.
“The Board of Education has been impressed by Dr. Smith’s vision of ‘Building a Better Tomorrow, Today’ for the school district,” School Board Chair Jessie Goree said. “Dr. Smith’s tenacity for laying the groundwork for strategic improvement and supporting the district’s overall strategic plan is evident in his priorities to innovate our district during his tenure. This decision reflects the Board’s confidence in his leadership and commitment to the district’s ongoing progress.”
When he was appointed interim superintendent, he announced his five priorities.
Those priorities include:
— Create safe schools and a wonderful work environment for all students and staff.
— Improve instruction to enhance students’ academic achievement.
— Ensure Clayton County Public Schools has strong business partnerships and financial stability.
— Prioritize organizing of the administration and its resources for greater success.
— Implement more facility improvements and special projects.
“It is an honor and a privilege to continue serve our community in this capacity and I thank the members of the Board of Education for their collective investment of confidence and belief in the plans set forth by this administration,” Smith said. “I look forward to our continued partnership in ‘Building a Better Tomorrow, Today’ for our students, parents, and Clayton County communities as a whole.”
