The ATL Airport District Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), the destination marketing organization for the cities of College Park, Hapeville, and Union City, Ga., will welcome the nation’s top collegiate powerlifting athletes during the USA Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals. The adrenaline-charged, four-day competition will take place at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC) on Thursday, April 11 through Sunday, April 14.
“The electric energy of records being shattered and champions crowned at the 2024 USA Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals will be unmatched,” says Cookie Smoak, president of the ATL Airport District CVB. “We eagerly anticipate witnessing the passion of these athletes at the GICC and know this will be an event that all attendees – friends, family members and even members of our local community – will enjoy!”
Established in 1981, USA Powerlifting operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is the leading drug-tested powerlifting organization in the United States. The organization is responsible for sanctioning local and regional events where powerlifters can compete and qualify for national-level events, including the USA Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals. USA Powerlifting boasts representative chairs in each state who oversee the development and implementation of local competitions, state championships and state records.
Different from weightlifting, a sport made up of two lifts, powerlifting is comprised of three lifts – squat, bench press and deadlift. Competitions may include one, two or all three of the lifting disciplines and athletes are categorized by sex, age and body weight. Each competitor is allowed three attempts at each lift, with the best lift in each discipline added to their total. The lifter with the highest total is declared the winner. In cases where two or more lifters achieve the same total, the individual with the lightest body weight will be awarded as the victor.
