JONESBORO — An Atlanta man who had been arrested for a 2022 murder at a Riverdale restaurant will be spending the rest of his life in prison.
On Tuesday, Jan. 30, Clayton County Superior Court Judge Jewel Scott sentenced Deanthony Jarquavious Whiteside, 23, of Atlanta, to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Whiteside entered guilty pleas for felony murder, first degree criminal damage to property, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a first offender probationer.
According to information presented by the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office at a plea and sentencing hearing, the Clayton County Police Department responded to a shooting at a Riverdale restaurant on July 20, 2022.
Based on surveillance video obtained from the restaurant, the DA’s Office said it was clear that Whiteside and the victim — Emmanuel Udoh — got into an argument about Whiteside stealing Udoh’s keys.
The argument over the keys lasted just over over one minute before Whiteside produced a .40 caliber firearm from his pants and shot the unarmed victim nine times inside of the restaurant, the DA’s Office said.
Udoh died as a result of the gunshot wounds he sustained at the hands of the defendant, who was a stranger to the victim.
Whiteside turned himself in to police on July 29, 2022.
“Once again, justice has been served and we hope the citizens of Clayton County can rest easier knowing that we have removed a violent offender from our community,” Clayton County District Attorney Tasha Mosley said. “As always, I commend my office on their tireless work to secure justice on behalf of the citizens of Clayton County.”
