ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Agriculture is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, marking a historic milestone as the United States’ first and oldest State Department of Agriculture.
Established on February 28, 1874, the department has played a pivotal role in supporting and safeguarding Georgia’s agriculture industry. Since its inception, the department has evolved to meet the changing needs of Georgia’s No. 1 industry, playing a vital role in supporting and protecting farm families, ensuring the safety of the state’s food supply, and serving farmers, producers, and consumers in every corner of Georgia.
