A nationwide outage of AT&T’s cell phone network is impacting customers in metro Atlanta, according to reports.
Mayor Andre Dickens released a statement on social media stating that the city was “actively gathering information” about the outage but assured residents that 911 was still operable in case of emergencies.”
“We are aware that AT&T is having cellular outages this week and are actively gathering information to determine how the City of Atlanta can assist in resolving this issue. Atlanta’s e-911 is able to receive inbound and make outbound calls. We have received calls from AT&T customers that their cellular phones are in SOS mode. Please direct all inquiries to restore service to AT&T.”
The Atlanta Police Department also posted to social media that AT&T’s cellular disruption is not affecting the city’s E-911 services. AT&T cellular customers may be able to dial Atlanta’s E-911, but they are unable to make outbound calls.
APD said people can report calls using the E-911 web portal at https://www.atlantaga.gov/request-dispatch.
On Feb. 20, Atlanta’s E-911 services were disrupted for a short time in the afternoon due to AT&T technical difficulties impacting cities in the southeast, according to APD.
The Sandy Springs Fire Department used social media to let residents know it was aware of the outage.
“This is preventing cell phone users from placing calls, including to 911. Sandy Springs’ 911 center is fully operational and is answering calls for service,” the SSFD said in a Facebook post.
The fire department advised residents who are unable to make calls with their mobile devices to set the wireless dialing feature on their phone or use a landline to dial 911.
Sandy Springs residents on NextDoor in Winding River Village and in the Riverside Drive area reported outages this morning, though some also reported service had been restored.
