Some Sandy Springs residents will be without water from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, as contractors work on a waterline for the Mt. Vernon Highway Bridge.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) said in a social media post that the temporary water outage would impact an area that includes Mt. Vernon Highway at Highland Valley Court to Riverside Drive, and Mt. Vernon Highway at Whitner Road around to Idlewood Drive and back to Mt. Vernon Highway.
This temporary outage is needed as an 8-inch waterline is being adjusted for the new Mt. Vernon Highway bridge over I-285.
Last week GDOT contractors poured concrete for the bridge deck.
The bridge replacement is part of the I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension project. GDOT reported an accelerated construction schedule was required for the new bridge after an over-height and overweight tractor-trailer hauling equipment struck the existing bridge in September 2023. That made it structurally unsound and forced its permanent closure to all traffic.
