The Interstate North entrance to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area will be closed starting on Monday, March 18 as part of a paving project at four popular park units.
The project also addresses critical maintenance needs and safety concerns. Temporary closures will result at each unit during the construction work, CRNRA Superintendent Ann Honious said in a press release.
No access will be available at the Interstate North entrance during the project’s duration, according to the release. Pedestrians and bicyclists won’t be able to enter the park from Interstate North Parkway, nor will the connection to the trail system in Cumberland Community Improvement District be available.
Honious suggests visitors head to Cochran Shoals at Sope Creek or Columns Drive for the next few weeks.
Akers Mill was the first unit that was repaved. The Powers Island parking lot reopened on Saturday. The last repaving project will be at the Columns Drive parking lot.
The repair and repaving of the entry road and parking lots will correct sub-surface and water control issues, the release said. The National Park Service Pavement Preservation Program also includes stripping to improve traffic flow and parking visibility as well as replacement of unit signage. The project is funded through the Federal Lands Transportation Program.
