One day after announcing it was extending the search for a new superintendent, the Atlanta Board of Education announced it was also extending the contract of Interim Superintendent Danielle Battle.
In a press release, the board said it would extend Battle’s contract through Dec. 31, 2024.
“Battle has championed student success in education for more than 30 years and plans to leave a legacy of literacy improvement at Atlanta Public Schools,” the release said. “In addition to fulfilling her array of responsibilities and priorities as set forth for most US Superintendents, other programs include but are not limited to nutrition, transportation, discipline, health and safety, along with other academic subjects.”
The press release lauded Battle’s establishment of Atlanta Public Schools’ first-ever literacy policy. The policy requires the superintendent to pick “evidence-based literacy curricula” to improve student performance.
“Continuing this important work to illuminate the vision established by the ABOE is exactly what I am driven to do,” Battle said in the release. “The students, and the community, benefit from the literacy initiative being fulfilled by APS, and I am honored to lead that charge and happy to have more time to see it through.”
