ATLANTA, Ga. — The Carter Center announced Saturday afternoon that former President Jimmy Carter is in hospice care. Born in Plains, Georgia, Carter is 98 years old; he was the oldest living president. Carter served as the 39th President of the United States. The former President is known for his work supporting civil rights.
After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers.

In 1982, he founded The Carter Center. The organization has played an active role in human rights and disease prevention issues.
In August of 2022, The Carter Center launched the Georgia Democracy Resilience Network, a cross-partisan, grassroots effort that works “to bring together civic, business, and religious leaders and citizens from across the political spectrum to serve as community advocates for peaceful political engagement around elections.”
Dr. Rashad Richey, a Democratic strategist, broadcaster, and national political analyst, is part of the Georgia group of leaders tasked with growing the Democracy Resilience Network.
“Bridging divisions and working together is the most American thing there is,” Richey said during the organization’s August 2022 announcement. “This country has supported elections for two centuries, and the network is part of that tradition.”
The Carter Center also supports voter education campaigns in Georgia. The organization says “Georgia is one of several key states where the Center is lending its global expertise in conflict resolution and democracy strengthening.”
The Carters helped publicize Habitat for Humanity. He was the 76th governor of Georgia, between 1971 and 1975.

Across life’s seasons, President Jimmy Carter, a man of great faith, has walked with God. In this tender time of transitioning, God is surely walking with him.
May he, Rosalynn & the entire Carter family be comforted with that peace and surrounded by our love & prayers. https://t.co/e2FOR4jBLW
