CLAYTON COUNTY — Public safety agencies in Clayton County and the city of Jonesboro celebrated the annual National Night Out Tuesday, Aug. 1.
Clayton County held its celebration at The District in Morrow while the city of Jonesboro held its event at Lee Street Park.
“National Night Out is an annual opportunity for the community and law enforcement to engage,” Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts said. “What’s great is the collaboration and partnerships between multiple agencies (in the county and municipalities).”
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community relationships and building safer neighborhoods.
“This is a great place for the community and law enforcement to get to know each other and build relationships — that’s what it’s all about,” Roberts said.
National Night Out was first held in 1984 in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, Penn.
It began with neighbors simply turning on their porchlights and sitting in front of their homes. Now, some of the National Night Out events are full-blown festivals and parties with a wide range of activities.
“Really, it’s just a great thing to have all of us here together with a common goal,” Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen said. “Usually, I don’t have the chance to see the chief of police unless it’s a call. It’s a good thing to see all of the chiefs of police and people in the county here. It’s just good for the community.”
