HAMPTON — The city of Hampton and the FBI are investigating the distribution of flyers containing racist information throughout several neighborhoods.
The city was first made aware of the flyers Sunday morning and most of the neighborhoods that were hit were off U.S. Highway 19/41, said Hampton City Manager Alex Cohilas. Some businesses off Main Street were also hit, he said, and flyers were reported at some residences in unincorporated Hampton.
As of Monday, about 227 flyers had been reported.
“The city of Hampton is pursuing this aggressively with the FBI’s Atlanta Field Office,” Cohilas said.
Cohilas also emailed an official statement on behalf of the city of Hampton.
“The city of Hampton is disgusted by and condemns the actions of those responsible for the distribution of these hateful leaflets throughout our city,” the statement read. “They are in no way representative of our city, our citizens, or our values. The Hampton Police Department, in conjunction with the Atlanta field office of the FBI, is investigating this matter.”
A Hampton resident in the Liberty Square subdivision (which is off U.S. Highway 19/41 near Atlanta Motor Speedway) emailed the Henry Herald Sunday after finding flyers in the neighborhood that morning.
The photos the resident shared included a flyer that stated “White Unity,” “Defend Your Race” and “Love Your People.”
One photo of the flyers has photos of the four Hampton residents who were murdered on June 15. Another photo of the flyers contained homophobic and anti-Semitic language.
“This morning I was out for my usual hour-long walk when I came upon these baggies in many driveways along the northern section of Madison Avenue,” the resident wrote in an email. “They are similar to those found in other Atlanta metro neighborhoods that I’ve seen reported in the news in the past…
