As the 2022-23 school year comes to a close, Clayton County Public Schools (CCPS) is placing an emphasis on the safety for students, staff and visitors.
While the Clayton County School Police will continue to have a visible presence at the 60-plus campuses and facilities, more layers of security are being added.
“I am totally focused on continuing the process of cultivating a school safety culture and a positive working environment as we prepare for the final days of school,” said Interim School Superintendent Dr. Anthony W. Smith. “While this is a time of celebration for our candidates for graduation and promotion, we expect visitors at special events to conduct themselves in accordance with the special nature of each event that recognizes the amazing accomplishments of all Clayton County’s scholars.”
Smith said the school system has added several Campus Security Officers (CSOs) to the existing force.
“These officers will be paired with recently purchased golf carts to patrol and secure the exterior of each campus, allowing our assigned School Resource Officers (SROs) and CSOs to concentrate their attention on the interior of their school,” Smith said.
During the next five weeks, filled with testing and special end-of-year events, individuals visiting a CCPS school may be approached by one of the district’s security personnel.
“Visitors to our schools at this time of year should have a reason to be at that location and be ready to explain their presence,” Smith said.
CCPS will continue its standard protocol of unannounced searches and expanded use of scanning technology. District leaders will make more frequent on-site visits to assigned schools to ensure that students are where they’re supposed to be and that school halls are clear to provide an appropriate — and safe — learning environment…
