JONESBORO — A Clayton County inmate died Friday evening after a medical emergency, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office announced late Friday night.
According a CCSO Nixle alert, the Clayton County Police Department brought Jason Sanford into the jail at about 12:25 p.m. Friday on the charge of giving a false name.
Jail medical staff initially assessed Sanford and he was cleared to enter the jail, the CCSO said.
At 1:12 p.m. Sanford was again seen by medical staff when he had complaints of back and wrist pain. Sanford was placed into an intake holding cell to finish the remainder of the booking process.
Sanford began to have a medical emergency and became unresponsive. Narcan was administered, CPR, and other life-saving efforts were performed, the CCSO said.
Clayton County Emergency Medical Services transported Sanford to Southern Regional Medical Center, where life-saving procedures continued but at 7:18 p.m., Sanford died.
The following agencies were then notified — Clayton County Medical Examiner, GBI, and Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division and Internal Affairs units.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the Sanford family from Sheriff Levon Allen and the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office,” the CCSO stated.
