CLAYTON COUNTY — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an incident Thursday where a Clayton County Police officer shot and killed a sexual assault suspect at a gas station on Riverdale Road.
In a Thursday press release, the GBI identified the sexual assault suspect as Robert Prince, 38, of College Park.
No officers were injured in the incident.
At about 11 a.m. Thursday, Clayton County Police officers were investigating allegations of sexual assault and false imprisonment involving Price and his wife.
The GBI said as officers were arriving to execute a search warrant at the location where the alleged sexual assault took place, Prince was seen driving past the location in a black car.
Officers followed Prince to the Valero gas station at 5300 Riverdale Road, north of Norman Drive, and attempted to detain him for questioning.
Prince got out of his car and started shooting at the officers, hitting the windshield and body of the police car.
Officers retreated to cover and returned fire, killing Prince, the GBI said.
In a Thursday afternoon press conference, Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts said one officer returned fire and that officer is on administrative leave. The CCPD is also investigating the incident, Roberts added.
Prince was pronounced dead on the scene and his body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur where a medical examiner will perform an autopsy.
The GBI is conducting an independent investigation and once complete, the case file will be given to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
After the shooting, authorities secured the area and closed down a portion of Riverdale Road.
“Officers are here to keep the community and things do turn tragic in a moment’s notice and I’m just thankful that our guys and our community are safe now,” Roberts said.
