As Earth Day approaches, Atlanta-based nonprofit Live Thrive is putting together a pair of initiatives that aim to promote sustainability among adults and kids.
For the fourth year in a row, Live Thrive’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) is hosting the CHaRM Corporate Challenge, a program that encourages local corporations to task their employees with a recycling competition throughout Earth Month.
The initiative has seen remarkable success over its duration, with recycling collections increasing each year, culminating in a record-high 140,000 pounds in 2023.
This year’s list of Corporate Challenge participants include Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, Monarch Private Capital, The Home Depot Foundation and many more.
Peggy Whitlow Ratcliffe, Live Thrive’s executive director and founder, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts when it comes to recycling promotion.
“There is a concern that individual recycling is not enough to make a difference, which can lead people to skip it,” said Ratcliffe. “But the figures we achieve through collaboration are astounding, and they can encourage more participation among the apathetic or despairing.”
The other initiative slated to take place this month is Kids Day, an event that focuses on educating and engaging the next generation of environmental stewards.
Held at CHaRM’s soon-to-open DeKalb location on April 20, the event gathers environmental groups, along with recycling and corporate partners of Live Thrive, to provide interactive, educational and eco-friendly activities for local children.
Leading up to the event, CHaRM is also giving local schools the opportunity to participate in its Plastic Bottle Collection Contest and T-Shirt Design Contest.
