JONESBORO — Clayton County Public Schools is hosting a Special Education Teacher Job Fair Thursday, Feb. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the S. Truett Cathy Professional Learning Center, 1087 Battle Creek Road in Jonesboro.
Applicants will need to bring resumes and evidence of education completion as interviews will be conducted onsite.
According to statistics from a Jan. 29 Clayton County Board of Education work session, the school system is seeing an increase in graduation rates for students with disabilities.
In the 2022-23 school year, Clayton County Public Schools had a 71.1% graduation rate for students with disabilities — up from a graduation rate of less than 50% in 2017-18.
In Clayton County, there are about 6,000 students with disabilities — making up about 11.1% of student enrollment.
“I really like the direction we’re going,” said Forest Park special education teacher and head baseball coach Josh Froneberger in a Feb. 5 interview. “It’s a hard process now, but I think they look back on the numbers and evaluating themselves on kids after high school and I think what we’re doing now is incorporate kids more into the classroom to general education.”
Froneberger said he feels like that is going to help the students more and help them develop their social skills.
