The Georgia Historical Society’s Georgia History Festival continues in February with a weekend of educational events for students and families. In recognition of the founding of Georgia on February 12, 1733, this year’s festivities begin on Friday, February 9, 2024, with the inaugural Georgia Day Expo at the Savannah Civic Center from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. More than 1,200 students from local public, private, and home school groups have registered for the event.
Complementing the Georgia History Festival theme, “Governing Georgia Across Three Centuries,” the Expo will allow registered students to learn about Georgia history, government, and civics through demonstrations, performances, and hands-on activity booths. Experiences are provided by local, state, and national organizations including the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, the Bill of Rights Institute, the Atlanta Center for Puppetry Arts, Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, local elected officials, the Chatham County Board of Elections, the Savannah Police Department, and the Third Infantry Division Museum. The Georgia Day Expo is sponsored by Georgia Power.
The Festival continues with the Colonial Faire and Muster on Saturday, February 10, 2024, and Sunday, February 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Wormsloe State Historic Site in Savannah. This popular living-history program is open to the public and features costumed interpreters and vendors offering children and adults a taste of the excitement and adversity of life for the first settlers of early Georgia. Highlights include cannon and musket firing; blacksmithing, craft, and cooking demonstrations; Native-American life interpretations; storytelling; and period music and dance. The event is free on Sunday, due to generous sponsorships from the Georgia Ports Authority and Jepson Associates, with additional support from the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Georgia. Entrance fees apply on Saturday. For more…
