JONESBORO — When Chanae Clemons first started working in the Clayton County court system in 2006, she didn’t intend to stay.
She had graduated from Valdosta State with an exercise physiology degree and when she was unable to get a job in that field, she applied for a position in Clayton County State Court.
She also went on to work in Magistrate Court, the Solicitor General’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, and Superior Court.
In January 2023, she was appointed Superior Court clerk.
She still held out for a career in exercise physiology for a time, but as the years have gone by, she fully embraces working in the court system.
“I’m vested now — I might as well stay,” she said. “I enjoyed what I did — I enjoyed the interactions with the public. I enjoyed going to court. I enjoyed the work — the whole capacity of the work.”
She admitted that dealing with facts and doing research fit in with her OCD personality.
“All that was right up my alley,” she said.
There’s never a typical day in her office, and at first she had a list of things she wanted to get done during the day and reduced it to a few goals.
“I’m good if I an get to one every day,” she said. “You never know what you going to encounter. There’s always a fire to put out …You never know how your day is going to go, but there’s never a dull moment with this position. You really have to condition your mind to that. If you’re a schedule person, that can be very frustrating and so I had to change my thought process.”
Because she has worked in so many different offices in the court system, that experience has helped her as Superior Court clerk — both the nuts and bolts of the position and the relationships.
“It has been a tremendous help with this job with learning this position in researching things I needed to find out,” she said….
