JONESBORO — The Clayton County Board of Commissioners is entering into an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for the Tara Boulevard Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project.
During its Dec. 19 meeting, the county commission unanimously approved to enter into the agreement.
“This has been a long time coming,” Commissioner Felicia Franklin said. “I’m really excited and glad to hear we’re going to continue to save lives and ensure (U.S. Highway) 19/41 is safe for pedestrians.”
Clayton County is to fund $286,766 toward the project, according to the Dec. 19 agenda packet.
The project extends through the entirety of Tara Boulevard — from Upper Riverdale Road to the Clayton-Henry county line in Lovejoy.
The ultimate goal is to have complete sidewalks on both sides of the road with pedestrian lamps and pedestrian lighting.
Construction is about two to three years away.
In some other action during the meeting, county commissioners also approved the following:
— Emergency purchases of vehicles. One contract is for more than $1.1 million for eight trucks and SUVS and one contract is for more than 11 trucks for nearly $500,000.
The purchases are being paid for from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax money.
— Contracts with Charles Reed for chief staff attorney and Detrick Stanford for chief operating officer.
— An application for a 2024 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant from the Georgia DOT. The 2024 grant is valued at nearly $2.5 million with a required 30% match from the county.
— A resolution urging Gov. Brian Kemp and the Georgia General Assembly to continue efforts to reform and improve mental health services throughout the state and Clayton County.
— Rezonings for a convenience store with fuel sales and a commercial parking lot at 400 Conley Road, Forest Park.
