JONESBORO — During the Clayton County Board of Commissioners regular meeting Dec. 19, Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen gave a progress report hon ow emergency/additional funding is being spent and how much money is remaining.
According to Allen’s statements at the meeting, since he took over as sheriff in December of 2022, more than $13.34 million has been received for improvements in the Sheriff’s Office.
He said of that amount, he received about $5.21 million that went directly into his budget.
A glance at how the money has been spent:
— Nearly $3 million was spent to fill 33 deputy positions in the Sheriff’s Office.
As of Dec. 19, Allen said there were 433 total positions at the Sheriff’s Office with about 13 unfilled.
About $130,000 was spent to buy Tasers and firearms for the deputies, and $1.8 million was spent to buy 33 new police vehicles.
Allen said the vehicles are now in the shop getting ready to be used by deputies. The cost to upgrade the vehicles is about $473,000.
— More than $6.7 million was allocated for emergency repairs at the jail — including hinge and lock repairs, lights, and toilets. Nearly $444,000 is left out of that fund.
— In November, commissioners approved more than $2.3 million for improvements at the jail — including washers and dryers and undergarments and uniforms for inmates.
Allen said new washers have been installed and dryers will be installed after the new year.
