JONESBORO — During its Tuesday, Dec. 19, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the sale of firearms.
Toward the end of the meeting after concerns were voiced during public comments about the sale, Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts clarified that the guns won’t be sold directly to the general public but to licensed firearms dealers through auction.
Roberts also added that these are not firearms that the county obtained though Gun Buy Back events. The Gun Buy Back events are federally-funded and local agencies are required to destroy those guns.
Georgia law allows for the sale, destruction, or transfer of unclaimed firearms and firearm-related accessories.
According to information in the meeting agenda packet, there were 66 items identified in the list of firearms and accessories to sell.
Those items were either found property or abandoned property, maintained for safekeeping purposes and unable to be returned to their rightful owners, and are beyond the retention periods established by law.
