JONESBORO — There’s a new generation of leadership is coming up in Jonesboro as the first Jonesboro Youth City Government was sworn in Dec. 11.
Clayton County Chief Magistrate Judge Keisha Wright-Hill led the swearing in of Youth Mayor Muhammad Ali, Youth City Manager Zahion Mikell, and Youth Council members Keilana Hill-Byrd, Elias Dennis, Issac Hathway, Yasden Dutary Gayle, Daniela Avitia, and Kayla Way.
The development of a Youth Government was spearhead by Jonesboro City Council member Alfred Dixon.
“This is more than a ceremony,” Dixon said during the swearing in ceremony. “This moment symbolizes the trust we place in the younger generation; this moment symbolizes we acknowledge their voices, perspectives, and commitment to civic duty. Three constituent aides — Lizet Avitia, Ronnie Wells, and Wanda Robins — played a crucial role in supporting the program through an internship partnership with Clayton State University.
Henry County Board of Commissioners member Neat Robinson was also instrumental in the development of the Youth Council as she has helped other Youth Councils in the region and state.
“This is your opportunity to go higher,” Robinson told the new Youth Council members. “If you want to learn about your government here in Jonesboro, you have so much opportunities — take advantage of it.”
Robinson was just one of many government and school officials and other community leaders attending the ceremony.
Also attending were Clayton County Board of Commissioners Chair Jeff Turner, Clayton County Commission Vice Chair DeMont Davis, Clayton County Board of Education Chair Jessie Goree, Forest Park City Council member Hector Guitrez , and Clayton County Chief Operation Officer Detrick…
