RIVERDALE — A Lithonia man faces multiple charges after a DeKalb County armed robbery and carjacking ended in a fatal wreck Friday in Riverdale.
According to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Deundra Rayshun Smith, of 1904 Wellborn Road, Lithonia, faces the following charges — first degree vehicular homicide (pending as of Saturday) , theft by taking a motor vehicle, fleeing and attempting to elude police, serious injury by motor vehicle, possession of a firearm during a commission of a felony, failure to maintain lane, and seat belt violation.
The armed robbery and motor vehicle Rheft occurred in DeKalb County and will be handled by officials in DeKalb, the CCSO said.
According to Clayton County Court records, Smith was scheduled for a first appearance hearing in Clayton County Magistrate Court Sunday at 11 a.m.
According to a CCSO Nixle alert sent out Saturday, at about 9:10 p.m. Friday, the Riverdale Police Department spotted a Yellow Chevrolet Camaro by the description and tag. Because the suspect was armed and dangerous, the Riverdale officers called for assistance.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office Cobra Unit was on general patrol in the Riverdale Road area and at 9:12 p.m., the Cobra Unit and Riverdale police attempted to conduct a felony traffic stop.
According to the CCSO, as law enforcement exited their vehicle, Smith turned off the headlights and fled from the scene at a high rate of speed.
Smith fled for about three-quarters of a mile before he lost control of the Camaro, crossing over into the opposite lane of traffic and colliding head-on with a vehicle at Riverdale Road and Garden Walk Boulevard.
The vehicle Smith struck head-on had three people in it and all three were transported to local hospitals with two in serious condition and one with minor injuries.
