JONESBORO — In its November regular meeting, the Clayton County Board of Education honored five schools for earning designations of 2022-23 Literacy Leaders from the Georgia Department of Education.
The Georgia DOE honored five schools in the “growth” category for demonstrating a 15% or greater increase from the school year 2021-22 to 2022-23 in third-grade reading.
Clayton County schools earning this award were Harper Elementary, Kay R. Pace Elementary School of the Arts, Northcutt Elementary, Pointe South Elementary, and West Clayton Elementary.
A total of 155 schools were honored statewide in the “growth” category or in the “achievement” category.
Literacy Leader qualifications use the Georgia Milestones Reading Status indicator, which is based on the Lexile score associated with students’ performance on a subset of questions on the English/Language Arts assessment.
Other recognitions during the Nov. 6 School Board meeting included:
—Jonesboro High School students Joceline Rebolledo and Marlon Marquez were honored for earning the National Hispanic Recognition Award from the College Board National Recognition Program.
These programs celebrate students’ hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance.
The academic honors for rural area, Black, Indigenous, and/or Latino students are an opportunity for students to share their strong academic achievements with colleges and scholarship programs that are seeking to recruit diverse talent.
— Local school psychologists were honored in recognition of in honor of National Schools Psychologists Week.
— The Clayton County Public Schools Communications Department was honored for earning five state-level Georgia School Public Relations Association awards.
