JONESBORO — Clayton County Public Schools teachers of the year are soaring to new heights…literally.
In a special event Friday at the CCPS Café, teachers of the year were presented with tickets to New York City thanks to a partnership between the school system and Delta Airlines.
“Getting the ticket to New York was very exciting because I’ve never been to New York before so knowing my district is taking me to New York is very exciting — very amazing,” CCPS Teacher of the Year Daisha Taylor said.
Helping present the tickets was Morrow High School flight operations instructor Katiana Charnel.
“It’s been an awesome experience — I love how excited they are,” Charnel said. “Flying is a passion of mine and so I cannot wait for them to go to New York.”
Taylor teaches fifth grade math and science at Church Street Elementary School in Riverdale. Originally from Detroit, she has been at Church Street and CCPS for 10 years and has been an educator for for a total of 15 years.
“Getting district teacher of the year is very exciting,” Taylor said. “It’s an amazing feeling to know that the people outside of your school building can see the work that you do. I never imagined being teacher of the year for the district so this is a very exciting experience.”
Friday’s event was the first of its kind activity for the district.
“You all deserve all the accolades for what you have done and what you are doing and I say ‘congratulations’,” CCPS Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning and Strategic Improvement Delphia Young told teachers during the program.
Teachers were also given free fresh vegetables, a meal, and containers during Friday’s program. Teachers of the year were also recently treated special photo shoots.
“This event is a special way for us to show our appreciation and recognize the hard work and…
