JONESBORO — In an effort to get students back on track after the COVID-19 pandemic, Clayton County Public Schools is introducing a new program — Actions Intended for Results (AIR).
The school system is offering the math and reading program on Saturdays for students in grades 3 to 12.
It’s open for all students through an open registration but students are particularly targeted based on Georgia Milestones and Measures of Academic Progress.
“Efforts to recover and accelerate learning has been slow and inconsistent in school districts throughout the state of Georgia,” a statement in the Clayton County Board of Education’s Sept. 25 work session read. “Such is the case in Clayton County Public Schools as well. It is essential that educational leaders in CCPS support students to accelerate their learning and get them back to pre-pandemic levels and beyond.”
The program begins Saturday, Oct. 28 for high school and Nov. 4 for elementary and middle school. The program is scheduled to continue until March 9.
The Saturday program times are 8 to 11:15 a.m. for elementary, 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for middle school, and 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. for high school.
The student-teacher ratio is expected to be one teacher for every 10 to 15 students.
Selected teachers will have a certification or degree in content area and special education certification is required to serve students with disabilities.
Preference will be given to those teachers who have demonstrated strong positive relationships with all students, have strong classroom management skills, and are known for their effective lessons aligned to students’ individual learning needs.
Busing and snacks/meals will be provided.
An high school evening academy is also in the works to supplement the AIR program.
