JONESBORO — At its Sept. 19 regular meeting, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners approved the expansion of the Forest Park Quarry.
The county commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit for Alston & Bird LLP to expand the gravel rock quarry by 61.62 acres at 5698 Ga. Highway 85, Riverdale.
The plan was approved with the following conditions:
♦ A copy of the Surface Mine Land Use Plan approved by Georgia EPD, as well as any permit amendments made, will be provided to Clayton County.
♦ Clayton County Fire and Police departments will be added to pre-blast notifications.
♦ Customers’ trucks shall not be allowed to access the subject property from highway 85 to transport rock from the subject property.
♦ Blasting shall be limited from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays with no blasting on weekends or holidays.
♦ Blast events will be limited to no more than 30 in a 12-month period.
In July of 2020, the county commission unanimously voted to deny a conditional use permit to expand the quarry.
That denial came after the county’s Planning and Zoning Department and Zoning Advisory Group recommended approval with four conditions.
The mine has been in the area since the 1950s.
In other action during the Sept. 19 meeting:
♦ A first public hearing was held on the county’s 2024 Comprehensive Plan. The five-year update must be submitted to the state by Oct. 21, 2024.
♦ The county commission tabled several items related to a proposed development on nearly 20 acres at 9298 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro.
The development plans include a travel plaza, convenience store, a drive-thru restaurant, a gas station, a vehicle maintenance and repair facility, and a tractor-trailer service facility.
The plans came before the BOC in July but the plans were tabled then as well.
