FOREST PARK — The city of Forest Park and Georgia Power recently announced the official launch of ONE Light — a new strategic initiative that aims to complete the upgrade and replacement of the city’s aged high-intensity discharge light fixtures with more reliable, efficient light-emitting diode lights.
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about three-fourths of all pedestrian-related fatalities occurred during periods of darkness.
Research from the NHTSA also suggests that new or refined lighting can reduce the risks of certain types of crimes and encourage pedestrian activity at night, specifically near sidewalks, transit stops and bicycle lanes.
“Having dependable street lights provides better overall lighting, increases property values and can help serve as an effective tool when it comes to keeping our communities safe,” said Forest Park Mayor Angelyne Butler, MPA. “Through our partnership with Georgia Power, we are working diligently to ensure that residential neighborhoods, businesses, recreation areas and public facilities in Forest Park continue to remain safe no matter the time of day.”
Prior to the launch of the campaign, city staff and representatives from Georgia Power conducted an in-depth analysis of the city’s current street light inventory in order to evaluate area outages and future needs.
Officials plan to use the collected data to enhance visibility for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists during dark hours, while also working to increase public safety efforts in areas throughout the city.
