JONESBORO — With a 43-0 victory over Forest Park Friday night at Tara Stadium, Mundy’s went 5-0 for the first time in school history.
Even though head coach Earthwind Moreland is certainly glad the team is undefeated during the first half of the 2023 season, the team isn’t resting on its laurels.
“Sometimes I’m hard on them but like I tell them — a lot of teams would love to be 5-0 and I’m actually glad that we are in this position because we control our own destiny,” Moreland said. “It’s a great accomplishment but we’ve got bigger fish to fry.”
After Friday night’s victory, in his post-game talk with the team, Moreland actually was not happy with how his team played — and he let them know that.
“One thing — like I said — is we proud ourselves on is doing the little things right and so tonight I don’t feel like we did the little things right, the way we were supposed to do them so because that’s why when we actually come against a formidable opponent certain little things will cost you the game so that’s why I don’t look at the the score — I look at what we know we’ve coached and what we know we’re capable of doing,” Moreland said.
Mundy’s Mill (5-0 overall, 3-0 in Region 3-AAAAAA) racked up nearly 100 penalty yards — including one holding penalty that negated a touchdown run in the third quarter.
Those kinds of mistakes will prove costly as Mundy’s Mill gets further into its region schedule — including a Sept. 29 showdown with Jonesboro at Twelve Oaks Stadium
“Jonesboro plays pretty good football and we can’t allow ourselves to have a a great play and then it be called back due to penalties,” Moreland said. “We need to keep the chains — we need to stay ahead of the chains so now we aren’t in a compromising down and distance.”
